The Alchemist: Book Review

About the Book:

Paulo Coelho's novel The Alchemist is one of the most widely read books in history. It was initially published in Portuguese in 1988 and has since been translated into several languages throughout the world. The tale is an allegory that follows a young Andalusian shepherd on his quest to unearth a treasure among Egypt's pyramids after experiencing a reoccurring dream of doing so. In 1987, Coelho wrote The Alchemist in under two weeks. He was able to write at this speed because the tale was "already written in [his] soul," he claimed.

“One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.”

My review:

The Alchemist is a terrific novel with stunning narrative. The word choice is flawless, full of knowledge and philosophy. It was fantastic. The novel is beautiful and brimming with hope, which I believe is crucial in our lives. The book shows that the journey to your destiny is as important as the destiny itself. I like how the book uses the tale of an everyday youngster to stress the significance of faith, hope, and spirituality.

When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

I believe that everyone will like this book since we all have dreams, and sometimes all we need is someone to tell us that they could come true. The fact that this book deals with psychological, religious, and spiritual subjects that we can readily relate to and comprehend is a fascinating feature of it. Every character in the novel is distinct, and each one plays an important part in assisting the main character in fulfilling his destiny. This book is all about learning about omens and how to go about locating your own treasure.

“It’s the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”

As the reader follows Santiago on his quest to reach the pyramids, the theme of following one's aspirations is continually thrust onto them. There are references to biblical parables that have been seamlessly woven into the simple story telling, keeping me engrossed in the tale. This book teaches us not to run away from our destiny, but to embrace it by investing in the present, appreciating life for what it is, and never losing faith in the beauty of our destiny and dreams.

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.”

This is a highly recommended book for everyone, young or old, who aspires to great heights and continues to pursue their dreams. Overall, "The Alchemist" is a thrilling fiction work that should be on everyone's bookshelves.

Questions To Consider While Reading:

1. Where did you think the treasure was while you were reading? Did you think it existed?

2. Would you follow visions and innuendos form others to find your “treasure”?

3. Did you like the style of writing? Why or why not?

4. Did you like the line between reality and the supernatural?

5. Did you notice the circular theme? Santiago ended up where he started to find the treasure? Do you think he will return to Fatima and complete another circle?

Rating: The story 5/5 ; The writing 5/5
